“What is a Portrait”

A portrait tells a story. Portraits can show us what a person looks like, or how the artist sees them, but they can also capture an idea of a person or what they stand for. Portraits can also reveal how a person wants to be seen, and capture a particular attitude or mood that the sitter wishes to convey.

A portrait can do many things. It can give a sense of importance to a person and their life; it can make a person more widely known; it can also give immortality to a person’s character: portraits live on forever! For this open call,  Gallery 40 is seeking portrait artworks in any medium, but limited to 2-dimensional artwork.

Juror of Selection: William Noonan

William Noonan originally from Monroe, New York was born in 1962. After a career in graphics and publishing at The Village Voice in New York City, William returned full-time to his first love: fine art, and to the Hudson Valley, where he now resides in Newburgh, New York. He has a BFA from the State University of New York at Purchase and has since studied at the New York Academy of Art, the Woodstock School of Art, The International School of Art-Umbria Italy, and the Art Students League of New York.

An inclination for the figure, a deep love of Italian art and the investigation of his own Italian heritage, through travel and study, inform his work. While drawing on European traditions, his work is part of the continuum of American Realism.

He teaches at the Wallkill River School of Art and out of his home studio.  Primarily working in oils he also includes pastels, acrylics, watercolor, drawing and printmaking techniques in his repertoire. His work has been exhibited locally, on Cape Cod, and through various Internet venues. DREAMS: Postcards from the Soul

Dreams are postcards from our souls. While we sleep, our dreams become passageways to other dimensions, where the soul roams free. When we wake, fragments of the journey return to our consciousness as visual imagery and symbolic language. They are keepsakes from our dream journey, postcards from the soul. Artists will capture their nocturnal visions and text to be displayed on postcards.

The art exhibition, *Dreams: Postcards from the Soul*, invites viewers to embark on a journey through the mysterious and profound realm of dreams. This collection features a series of visual imagery paintings, dialogue, poetry, and multimedia works that explore the concept of dreams as messages—or "postcards"—sent to us from the depths of our own souls. Each artwork serves as a visual representation of the subconscious mind, filled with symbols, emotions, and narratives that bridge the gap between the conscious and the unconscious. â€‹â€‹
